Why Maintaining The Status Quo, While Comfortable, Is Not A Good Option:

I once heard  someone say:
“Fish in a pond will not move on their own. But add a predator, and you will see them swim.”

In Facilities Management (FM), the “pond” often represents stability, routines, and legacy systems. The expression “We’ve always done it that way” is a HUGE red flag. While stability is important, too much comfort slowly kills performance.

The “predator” in FM operations is not fear or intimidation. It is the stress from being challenged to continuously improve.

In high-performing organizations, movement happens when there is:
a. Clear expectations
b. Accountability
c. Benchmarking beyond internal comfort
d. Leaders who challenge the status quo

Facilities Management should not only keep the pond safe and clean. It should create the conditions that make people move, think, and improve. Because without movement, even the safest and cleanest pond eventually stagnates.
