Facilities Management (FM) Challenge
The latest SFG20 State of FM Report reveals critical trends shaping our industry:
- Compliance is non-nogtiable – With tightening regulations like the Building Safety Act, FM teams must prioritize evidence-based maintenance to mitigate risks.
- Budget constraints dominate – 69% of organizations face stagnant or reduced FM budgets, forcing tough choices between compliance, sustainability, and technology adoption. Deferred maintenance and life cycle issues are creeping up as well.
- Digital transformation lags – While CAFM systems are widely used, IoT, AI, and predictive maintenance remain underutilized due to cost and skills gaps.
- Net zero progress is slow – Only 38% of organizations aim for 2030 carbon targets, with budget and expertise barriers hindering sustainability initiatives.
- Asset registers are a weak link – 43% admit their registers are less than 75% accurate, risking compliance and operational efficiency.
- There is a huge aging workforce dilemma facing the industry in the very near future at all level of the typical FM organization.
- The ability to provide Administration with accurate data to make data driven capital and budget decisions is lacking. Asset Management Systems are underutilized. A majority of Institutions have not completed a Facilities Condition Assessment. Good data is the foundational element of a Total Cost of Ownership approach to effectively managing assets.
The big question is: How is your organization balancing compliance, cost, program and sustainability?
